Hard to find just the screw only for sale. $10 is a fair price, IMO.

      The timing belt is not turning b/c of a broken plastic gear on top of a vertical shaft that powers the pulley on the right. That means your hook does not rotate so no sewing. It's a 50+ year old model. About 3 years ago I searched for any business that would replace that gear in the Phoenix Metro area. Population about 5 million. I found ONE qualified sewing center and they quoted me $150 to $225 for the labor. I ended up doing it myself b/c I had bought the machine for $15. The gear cost $9.00 www.amazon.com/s?k=155819&me=A3S73BWZA5BA61&ref=nb_sb_noss I have some videos about doing it. This was a model 457: ruclips.net/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/видео.html This playlist for Model 466 (similar) has 4 videos about planning the gear change, opening the machine, changing the gear, and resetting that timing belt so sew again. ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJTjJ3dRTrDPtIqR6DMoaex I have no idea who could help you in Des Moines, Iowa. Some of my viewers in the US and other countries have hired motorcycle mechanics, lawn equipment repairmen, or other similar folks to watch my videos and do the work. A quick Google search came up with this fellow in your area who works on vintage and antique Singer machines. beardsandbobbins.com/ Good luck and thanks for watching my channel.

    What is the difference between this and a 348?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953 2 дня назад

      Nice question, Tola. The main difference is the hook and hook drive systems. The motors, foot pedal, stitch controls, tension unit, and needle bar system are all the same. They both have the Fasion Disc system to let you change out about 22 different stitch patterns. Model 338 (a couple years older) uses a Bell Crank Oscillating Hokk that is powered by Pitman Rods that make the hook kind of "tic-tok" back and forth, grabbing the needle thread to wrap around the bobbin thread and form one stitch. It also has that kind of sound, like a tick-tock back and forth. It is a strong system and IMO can last almost forever if you keep it oiled. Model 347 changed the hook to a Rotating Hook powered by a Timing Belt that runs on two metal pulleys to make the Hook go around in circles, always in the same direction. It grabs the needle thread every other rotation to make a stitch. It runs and sounds a little smoother, in my opinion, because it does not change directions. You can see about the Bell Crank Hook system in this model 338 video: ruclips.net/video/bsOkrDSw2yw/видео.html You can see a slide of the model 348 style belt & pulley system at about 0:18 into this slide show of a 347: ruclips.net/video/J9MFf4ogyk0/видео.html ( sorry, I have no videos for a 348.) This is also a strong hook system and easier to work on if needed. The two pulleys are metal and very strong. The timing belt can eventually stretch and need replacing, maybe after 10 to 15 years of regular use. I've never seen one break and you can adjust the tension on the belt over the years until it is just too big around. They cost about $10 to $13 today and you can do the change yourself. The flip-up door on both models to change the Fashion Discs works the same on both machines. Model 348 did add a little bump-out window on the nose cover with a little red lever to show you a number for pressure on the presser bar/foot. It's kind of a gimmick and Singer dropped it after this model. You can't really go wrong with either model. I guess I prefer the 348 b/c it's a little quieter and mechanical machines tend to be noisy anyway. Hope that helps you and you can search for other videos of both models, they sold tens of thousands of them here and in the EU countries. Thanks for watching my channel.

      @@andytubesewing1953 thank you!! My husband sneakily gave my 348 to a scrapper while i was out running errands. Someone has a 338 for sale on Marketplace for $125, hence my question. Motor belt is part #193066 (13 3/4IN) I bought a couple here that worked well: www.ebay.com/itm/285529028461 Your Model 237 uses 15X1 type needles in sizes 11, 14, 15, 18, 19, and 21. You can use any brand you like. My wife uses Schmetz or Singer brands. Remeber that the needle is the least exspensive cost of any sewing project when compared to the cost of thread and fabric. Don't skimp out and buy wierd needles. Thanks for the kind comment and happy sewing.

      Back in the day, Singer machine owners were told NOT to mess with bobbin tension as it was set by the factory. Of course, that was 50 to 60 years ago. The bobbin tension spring can be bent, have impacted lint/dirt under it and who knows who "messed" with it over the years. Here is a video about cleaning and adjusting a Class 66 bobbin case like yours: ruclips.net/video/HT5XZ5eYYEQ/видео.html Also, this video includes R & R of the motor belt and you may find it helpful: ruclips.net/video/6H-SDwXLQDk/видео.html Thanks for keeping that machine in service, and I appreciate your kind comment. I can say that many sewist s have told me a new needle makes all the difference on a sewing project and that it is the least expensive cost of any sewing project compared to materials and thread I do know they eventually get dull and also the eye of the needle can become misshapen from the thread dragging through it all the time even the best needles are not that expensive so I'd be sure to have some on hand

    When moving my stitch length regulator, on my Singer 404, the stitch length will not adjust to a larger stitch or smaller stitch. Please help. Thank you!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953 8 дней назад

      Longer or short stitch. Things I would check; without fabric on the machine put the regulator down and turn the handwheel toward you and see if the Feed Dog moves front to back and up and down. That fact that the regulator lever moves means the parts inside are probably OK for now. If the Feed Dog DOES move then be sure you have the Needle Plate fully seated all the way down. That is controlled by a lever on the machine bed below the stitch regulator lever. If the Needle Plate is raised even a small amount the teeth of the Feed Dog can not reach the fabric well enough to pull the fabric along when sewing. If the machine had not been used for months it should be oiled according to the manual and run for 3 to 5 minutes before sewing. Let's start with those steps and see what you find. If you have more comments please put them here and not on a different video until we find some answers. Thank you.

    Do I adjust the length of stay stitch on model 404 Singer machine? Thank you.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953 9 дней назад

      I've never heard the term "stay stitch" but I think it means back stitch or back tack like when you end a seam. On most vintage Singer models such as this 404, you move the feed regulator up to the top to reverse sew. I never tested on the 404 model but some models allow you to regulate the reverse stitch length by how high you raise the lever above the "neutral" or mid-point. The higher you raise it the longer the reverse stitch. I have also experienced where you MUST raise it all the way to reverse stitch and is it only one length, on the short side, and I think that's to end the seam with a "tight" short stitch. If stay stitch means something else please let me know. This video is all about removing and replacing the Feed Regulator if you can to know how it works. ruclips.net/video/omHg86F73HY/видео.html Thanks for watching my channel.

    My handwheel is spinning but my lever and needle not moving, please help😢

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953 11 дней назад

      To put the machine in bobbin winding mode (so the needle does not work) you hold the handwheel and turn the smaller knob to the left 1/8th turn. That releases the clamping washer and allows the handwheel to turn but stops the needle bar, etc. When you want to sew you hold the wheel and turn the smaller knob to the right. That engages the clamping washer and makes the needle bar, takeup lever, and feed dog move for normal sewing. What you describe sounds like your machine is in the bobbin winder mode. Try holding the wheel and turn the knob to the right firmly and see what happens. If that does not work, the clamping washer may be installed backward or missing. This video you comment on shows how to remove the handwheel parts starting at @01:25 and how to put the wheel including the washer and knob back on properly at @54:25

      Yes, they are Sister machines. Singer considered the 337 as a "Standard" zigzag model and the 338 as a "Special" zigzag model. That special is due to the interchangeable Fashion Discs you can swap in and out. Model 338 can also Two-Needle Sew. Other than those the other machine components are the same, motor, hool, needle bar, light, tension unit, feed control, etc. Thanks for watching my channel. Hey, I'm stuck with a set screw on the gear that won't loosen. I've hit it with a hammer, WD-40, duct tape, a rubber band, I even warmed it up with a lighter. I'm so scared of stripping it. What can I do?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953 13 дней назад

      Duct tape? I missed that one. I think you have 3 choices. Hit it with a dose of MPD*, or repeat what you've been doing. It's at the point of Patience & Persistence I call it. Your trying to turn the screw at the same time you hammer it. right? I never thought of using a lighter. I just use a hairdryer for longer and longer times. Those gears get VERY HOT 🔥and I believe the screw gets "baked" into the hole especially if oil is in the threads. That oil gets dried, like the gunk on the oven door. Heat is supposed to soften it. I have often laid the machine on its back and put a couple of cotton balls soaked in WD40 and wrapped them with a strip of t-shirt and let it sit for 12+ hours or more. I remove that and if it is still struck I use the heat for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. I've had a couple screws that took days to get out. I don't mind b/c I usually restore the foot pedal or motor while waiting. The 3rd choice is to quit I guess. You are sure the timing is off? That is why you want to loosen the gear screw? I did have one guy write me that he finally put his 401A in a chest freeze overnight and that worked. He believes it shrunk the screw away form the sides of the hole a tiny bit, *MPD = Magic Pixie Dust ❇

    12:34 Hi. I’ve done everything in your videos for my singer 237. The motor runs great until I hook it up with the belt. Then it makes an awful noise. I’ve tried adjusting it but that has not helped. Only makes the noise when tension is put on the motor. I’m at a loss. Anything I could try or should I order a new motor? Thanks

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953 15 дней назад

      You seem very sure the noise is from the motor, not the handwheel or other mechanical parts of the machine, so I'll base my answer on that. I would test this with the machine in bobbin winder mode, meaning the handwheel disengaged from the arm shaft as when you wind a bobbin. That eliminates all the other mechanical parts on the machine leaving just the handwheel to turn. I would first check the belt for damage or a "sharp curve" where a 1 to 2" spot has a sharp permanent curve from sitting on the pulley for years. It is apparent and stiff and causes havoc as the belt turns on the pulley. Be sure the belt is in good condition without cracks or little "chunks" missing from the edges. Next I would check the pulley and motor shaft for being loose or having play. With the motor NOT running, just pull and push on the pulley from front to back. At the most, there may be a TINY amount of movement. If the pulley is attached to the shaft by a set screw it should have zero play or movement. A loose pulley will make the shaft and belt rattle and shake. If the motor shaft is very loose I don't think you can do much about it. If you don't find any of these problems I would reinstall the belt and play with the belt tension. If it is loose it will rattle and slip. If too tight it will strain or "bog down" the motor making it strain and run slow and rough. Here is a video about the motor and wires. Maybe something in it will be meaningful to you: ruclips.net/video/mVX2Io_tomk/видео.html
